Shimla — Queen of Hills

Shimla Complete Travel Guide 2025–26

Places to visit · How to reach · 3-day itinerary — Himachal Explorer

Shimla is the most visited hill station in North India — and for good reason. At 2,200 m above sea level, the former summer capital of British India combines Victorian architecture, cedar forests, toy train rides and sweeping Himalayan views. This guide covers everything you need to plan your trip.

How to Reach Shimla

By Train — Toy Train from Kalka

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line built in 1903. The toy train covers 96 km across 102 tunnels and 800+ bridges in about 5–6 hours. Board at Kalka (connected to Delhi by Shatabdi Express). Book in advance on IRCTC — the Shivalik Deluxe Express and Himalayan Queen are the most popular services.

By Road

Shimla is 343 km from Delhi (6–7 hrs via NH44/NH5) and 115 km from Chandigarh (3 hrs). HRTC Volvo buses run nightly from Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Shimla. Private cabs are widely available from Chandigarh.

By Air

Shimla's Jubbarhatti Airport is small and flight-dependent on visibility. The alternative is to fly into Chandigarh (commercial airport) and drive to Shimla.

Places to Visit in Shimla

The Ridge & Mall Road

The heart of Shimla. Christ Church (1857), the neo-Gothic Gaiety Theatre, and the sweeping Ridge open space with panoramic Himalayan views. Mall Road is pedestrian-only — the best evening promenade.

Jakhu Temple

The highest point in Shimla (2,455 m) has an ancient Lord Hanuman temple. Walk up (2 km through cedar forest) or take the ropeway. The giant 33-metre Hanuman statue is visible from most of the city.

Kufri

16 km from Shimla. In winter (December–February), skiing and snow activities. Year-round yak rides, the Himalayan Nature Park (snow leopards, bears, deer), and views towards Chail.

Narkanda

65 km from Shimla on NH5. Apple orchards line the road. Hatu Peak (3,400 m) is one of the best viewpoints in Shimla district. Skiing in winter, camping in summer. A great half-day extension from Shimla.

Viceregal Lodge (IIAS)

The imposing 1888 Elizabethan-style building that housed British India's viceroys. Now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Guided tours daily. Architecture photography at its finest.

Getting Around Shimla

The old town is largely pedestrian. Taxis and autos operate between localities. The Shimla ropeway connects the Cart Road to the Ridge. For day trips to Kufri, Narkanda or Chail, hire a local cab — easier and faster than HRTC buses from outlying spots.
